Craft: Toilet Paper Roll Butterflies

This project was done during our playgroup at a local park.

To make this project, you’ll need to do some prep work

Step 1: Collect some toilet paper rolls

Step 2: Glue construction paper to the toilet paper rolls

Step 3: Hole punch a hole at the top of the toilet paper roll for the antennae to go through

Step 4: Cut out the butterfly wings from construction paper.

Step 5: Cut out circles of different sizes. I used a circle cutter, but you can just cut them out free hand.

Step 6: Glue a craft stick to the inside of the toilet paper roll (Elmer’s Glue). Let the glue dry fully before doing the craft. (I do this for them so they can immediately use the butterflies)

Step 7: Cut pipe cleaners about 4 inches in length

You will need glue sticks, google eyes, and markers to complete the butterflies. Take notice of the recycled containers. I use anything from lunchable, frozen entrée, yogurt, and fruit cup containers as supply holders for the kids. It’s a great way of recycling.

Directions for the kids:

Step 1: Put the antennae on and twist

Step 2: Glue toilet paper roll to the wings by putting a line of glue down the center of the wings

Step 3: Glue the dots on the wings (anywhere)

Step 4: Glue the google eyes on

Step 5: Make a smiley face

Some of the kids were also decorating the wings with markers…So creative!

I always encourage the children to use their imaginations. They do not have to do everything perfectly at this age. I give them a model to show, but they have free reign to make their projects unique. Art is an expression, it wouldn’t be art if they all looked the same now would it?
