Holiday of Lights Planetarium Show
A timeless holiday classic! This half-hour program is projected against the dome of the planetarium and explores the many ways the winter solstice has influenced seasonal celebrations across time and cultures.
What do today's Christmas traditions have to do with farming celebrations of ancient Rome? What did the ancient druids of Ireland have in common with the Hopi people of the American Southwest? What's behind the symbols of Hanukkah, and what astronomical phenomenon might explain the mysterious "Star of Bethlehem"?
Learn all of this and more in this gentle meditation on the many ways that light threads through diverse celebrations of the season, followed by a short tour of the night sky with a real-time star show via our Hector Vector star projector as operators point out what to look for over Tucson heading into 2013. Holiday Laser Show
It's definitely not our Tucson-classic show, "Dark Side of the Moon," but it's just as fun! Lean back under the planetarium dome and let your spirit sing along with classic and pop holiday favorites as our laser system scans images at more than 30,000 times per second to create the illusion of solid-image animations. This 40-minute show features classic holiday music by Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Burl Ives as well as more contemporary pop favorites by the Eurythmics, Enya and Mariah Carey.
It's a show the entire family will enjoy (feel free to sing along!) and a great way to warm up after a look through our 16-inch reflecting telescope in the observatory (it's free, and our volunteers will show you the best the night sky has to offer!).
Note: Family Days and Nights get you all exhibits and shows for one low price! Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm and Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.
