What: Chinese New Year's Festival  Celebrating a tradition thousands of years old, the largest Chinese New Year’s festival in Arizona is back again in Centennial Hall. Directed by Dr. Larry Lang, this extravaganza features performers from the Shaolin Martial Arts master Junming Zhao, Chinese stunt performer Zhigang Chen and classical violist Hongmei Xiao. Also showcasing their talents are local performers from Sonoran Sound Quartet, Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, Chinese dancer Lucy Chen and Tucson Sino Dance. The festival highlights a Grand Chorus of local singing groups this fusion of East and West brings together a spectacular performance that can’t be missed!When:2pm Where:1020 E. What:Celebrate Chinese New Year with Puppets Amongus! This is the glistening story of how silk was discovered by a Chinese empress, when a cocoon fell in her cup of tea. With dragons and mystics, "The Silken Thread" is an adventure into the enchanted land of legend. Afterwards, watch the puppets present a short slideshow, featuring Puppets Amongus' recent trip to the Silk Road in Kazakhstan. Also, take part in a kids' dragon-making craft! When:Sat. What:Picture This! Art for Families Enjoy the Desert Grasslands exhibition and get inspired to create your own work of art. Local artist Kate Hodges will share information about the outdoor art education programs offered at The Land With No Name Sanctuary For Homeless Sculpture located in the high desert grasslands in the Sierrita mountains southwest of Tucson. Then, Tohono O’Odham artist Thomasa Rivas will demonstrate native basket weaving and help students create their own woven sample using local desert grasses. Hodges will then work with students to create a mandala tapestry using the woven samples and other mixed media for children 6 – 12 years and their adult companions.
