FREE Mexican Independence Day Celebration at the Fox Theatre

Join us for a true celebration of the culture and fierce independent spirit of Mexico that culminates with the traditional ringing of the bell and El Grito de Independencia (the independence cry) via a live broadcast feed directly from Mexico City, Distrito Federal! This traditional “Grito” cry commemorates Sept. 16, 1810, when revolutionary priest Miguel Hildalgo rang the church bell in the city of Dolores in central Guanajuato state and yelled “¡Mexicanos, Viva Mexico!” An 11-year-fight for Mexican Independence from Spain ensued.
Enjoy wonderful musical performances by Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra - Musical Director, Linus Lerner and The “Oaxaca Choir,” presented through the efforts of the “Insituto Cultural Mexicano de Tucson, Jesus Chumel Gomez, President.
