Hansel and Gretel: An Operatic Fairytale for All Ages in Tucson {A Giveaway}

Hansel and Gretel:
An Operatic Fairytale for All Ages in Tucson
 {A Giveaway}

Arizona Families was given tickets to attend and give to a reader in a giveaway.

What:Hansel and Gretel: An Operatic Fairytale for All Ages
Engelbert Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel is a classic, beloved by opera goers of all ages. This September, the Arizona Rose Opera Company tackles Hansel and Gretel, with some very talented local singers. Performed in English and set in a small cabin in the Ozarks in the early 1930s, the opera opens on the well-known brother and sister complaining of their hunger. Their mother, tired and overworked, comes home to find that they have been playing instead of working, and understandably loses her temper. While chasing after them, she accidentally breaks a jug that holds the only food in the house, and it is then that we see the true extent of her despair.  The children are sent into the woods to collect berries, where the real magic begins. As they journey deeper into the forest they leave reality behind, and encounter all sorts of fantastical adventures before they return safely home. Luke Howell's direction mixes reality with fantasy by incorporating video, dance, lighting effects, set design, and costuming that draws the audience deeper and deeper into the forest with Hansel and Gretel. This show is designed to entertain and engage, and is a perfect way to introduce younger audience members to opera.

Last season the AZ Rose Opera Company made their debut with Menotti's The Telephone and The Medium, which were extremely well-received. Hansel and Gretel is sure to meet their goal of making opera accessible and enjoyable for a modern audience. Many singers and crew are returning for this production. The local cast includes Kate Scally Howell as Gretel, Ariana Iniguez as Hansel, Powell Brumm as the father, Elizabeth Wells as the mother, Mackenzie Romriell as the Gingerbread Witch, Diana Olivares as the Sandman, and Brianna Barnhart at the Dew Fairy. Luke Howell returns to direct, Erin Recuparo and Jerrica Stewart will choreograph, and the talented AZ Rose team (including Brandon Howell, Ruben Rosthenhausler, and Leah Rosthenhausler) will help craft the production.
