A Mom's Review of Alice Through the Looking Glass

Alice Through the Looking Glass is a visually stunning and rich swirl of color and imagination for the dreamer in all of us. We saw the film and really enjoyed how it took us away to the whimsical  Underland. "Alice Kingsleigh (Wasikowska) has spent the past few years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit (Sheen), Absolem (Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Fry) and the Mad Hatter (Depp), who is not himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out."
The film has a few intense scenes, mainly I would say the scene when Alice is not in Underland but in an institution during Victorian time is the scariest. My kids asked about what was going on there and why there was a needle. Many of the themes are deep and complex. I think that older children, ages 10 and up will enjoy it much more than the younger ones.  The characters are outrageous and silly so they will capture their attention if you bring the little ones. 

My favorite character of all was the human-like incarnation of Time played by Sacha Baron Cohen. Although the other characters were a bit over the top, "Tick-Tock" as he is affectionally called by the Red Queen is very believable. Ironic that Sacha Baron Cohen's character and portrayal of him seemed the most realistic and entertaining to me considering some of his other movie roles. Many of the striking themes revolve around time. Alice says at the beginning of the film, " Time is a thief and a villain." As the film goes on we find that Time is just Time and it can steal from you unless you choose not to let it~ and you can learn from it because you can not change the past even with a cronosphere time machine.

The end of the film allows for some reconciliation between different characters but as not to give any spoilers, I will leave it at that and you will have to see for yourself. The Hatter and Alice say goodbye at the end of their wild adventure together and I love when he says that they will see each other again in, "the gardens of memory, in the palace of dreams."
