Tips:

1. Dress in costume! This may be a no-brainer but it really is so much fun to get dressed up. We are annual pass holders and had been in the park earlier in the day and because it can still get very warm in Anaheim this time of year - we opted to leave and change into our costumes for the evening party. As soon as the sun went down the kids were comfortable in their Disney-themed costumes.

2.Watch for all the details and the decorations that Disney makes sure to help you get into a Halloween mood everywhere!

3. Come early- if you are just buying the Halloween party tickets you can enter the park (Disneyland only) 3 hours early and then as the party begins you will have to have your party wristband to stay and the others will have to head out. This makes for an enjoyable less crowded time in the park.

4. Explore all the areas of the park- you will find villains, the Dapper Dans will transform to the Cadaver Dans and look at the Zocalo Dia de los muertos decorations for sure!

5.Go on the special Halloween rides- The Haunted Mansion will be transformed into the Nightmare Before Christmas  for Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain will be Ghost Galaxy!

Halloween Candy Buy Back-Tucson

Tucson Smiles Pediatric Dentistry will be hosting a Halloween Candy Buy Back where each child will receive $1 per pound of candy (5lb limit). All candy will be sent to a U.S. Military Troop overseas.

Halloween Clearance Finds-Albertson's

Albertson's had all Halloween stuff on clearance at 75% off. there were Disney princess/toy story costumes -dress up anybody? Masks, huge selection of paper plates, cups, napkins etc.
The candy was reduced as well in a center display in the frozen food aisle. Huge bags! I didn't buy any candy because frankly we do not need any over here.

Here is what I did pick up at Albertson's on Grant/Kolb:

(1) Large light-up Jack-o-lantern $1.84
(2) Jack-o-lantern strings of lights $2.62
(1) Ninja costume (already out of package and on child lol) $3.24
(1) pack of 3 cool skeletons .74c

I was happy with the clearance finds...keep your eyes open at all of the stores for more reductions on Halloween stuff.

Halloweeny Puddin' Pops

Cool huh?

I was looking for some Halloween inspiration yesterday and decided to go crafty blog hoppin'.  I found this great site called Girl Creative, which has a link list of other blogs art projects.  That's where I stumbled upon a blog called The Wilson World- random thoughts of a supermom where this idea came from.  I changed her idea to fit Halloween by using orange and black instead of rainbow colors.

Here's how to make them:

You'll need:

Vanilla pudding

cups and popsicle sticks or a popsicle container like I have pictured

food coloring

milk

2 bowls

Mix the pudding and milk as directed on the package

Separate Pudding equally into two bowls and add orange food coloring to one and black food coloring to the other.

Spoon Black pudding and then Orange Pudding into cups, being careful not to get any on the sides. I recommend the cup version rather than the narrow store bought popsicle container because if you get some on the sides this is what happens:

Freeze for a few hours (we did overnight) and Walla!

Leftovers?  What a great way to numb the pain of waiting for a popsicle to freeze for your little one.  Just dish up and serve:

Halloween Activites at the Zoo-Phoenix & Tucson

Craft: Spider Pinata

This Spider Pinata took 2 days and cost about $2 to make!

What you'll need:
Punch ball ($1 store)
Black Streamer ($0.79 at Party City)
Glue
2 white paper circles
1 red paper mouth, any shape
Flour and Water mixture
Strips of newspaper
8 strips of black cardstock for the legs

Here are the steps to make it:

 

Step 1: Blow up your punch ball (and blow up another for your kids to play with)

Step 3: Cut newspaper into one inch strips

Step 4: Mix flour and water to make the liquid glue.  I didn't measure, just eye ball it.  You want it to be liquid, not too thick

Step 5: Dip the strips of paper into the glue mixture and layer onto the balloon.  Cover it completely making sure no balloon is showing.  Do not put too many layers because it will make it difficult for the kids to break it. 

NOTE: Do this outside where you can hose off the area when you are done.  Also, wear some not-so-nice clothes.  I held the balloon between my legs while putting the strips on and my knees were soaked with glue mixture. 

Step 6: Let air dry.  It will drip, so I put a dish towel underneath.  I couldn't figure out where to hang it, but my son's bike worked perfect.  It was a nice day so it dried in about 6 hours.

Step7: Cut the balloon.  You will have a hole in the top and the bottom of the pinata shape. 

Step 8: Cut a piece of plastic in a 4x4 inch rounded edged square.  Cut two lines in the center.  Tie a rope/string to the plastic and insert into the top of the pinata hole. 

Step 9: Fill the pinata from the bottom hole with trinkets/treats.

Step10: Cut a piece of brown paper bag a little larger than the bottom hole and place over top of the hole and repeat the flour mixture strips over it.  (the brown paper bag will prevent drips from going onto your treats.)

Step 11: Let dry again

 

Step 12: Cut little slits along your streamer

 

Step 13:  Start glueing the streamer from the bottom up.  The bottom won't be pretty.  It takes a bit to get the streamer to wrap in a circle around the pinata.

 

Step 14: Fold 8 strips of black cardstock into accordian style and then glue the eyes, mouth and legs to the spider.

Other options:

~ Pumpkin.  Use a toilet paper roll and make slits at the bottom and fold outward. Put some glue on the top of the folded tabs.  Insert it into the top hole and then slip the plastic piece with the rope attached through the stem and into the pinata.  Hold the pinata by the rope to let glue set up between the tube and the pinata.  Use orange and green streamers to decorate. 

~ Ghost.  You could paint the newspaper white and then glue large sheets of white tissue paper and drap it off the bottom to look like a ghost, put a face and whalla!

Do it yourself Costumes

Better Homes and Gardens has 32 do it yourself costumes. 

I also just saw the cutest cupcake costume on Bakerella, just scroll down through the pictures until you see the little girl with the costume on. 

 (Never heard of Bakerella?  You MUST check out her site, she makes the cutest treats)

 I am making both of my kids costumes this year and on the cheap too! 

My daughter is a cat, so I picked up cat ears at the $ spot at Target, and picked up some "furry" fabric for $2.50 at Joanne's Fabric.  I just made cuffs for wrists and ankles, a collar and a tail on elastic to go around the waist.  I went to Walmart and picked up Garanimals black leggings and black turtleneck for $3.50 each that she can wear again later.

My son is going to be Ash, the pokemon trainer.  Such an easy costume!  I went to the 22nd Street Thrift store (see our post about this place, HERE).  We found a hooded sweatshirt with the pockets on the side for $2.  I cut it down the center and cut the sleeves and hood off.  I sewed them up and put a white short sleeve collar shirt that he had in his closet underneath, and picked up a green tee shirt.  We are still looking for the hat and gloves, but haven't tried really hard (yet).  I will be making some hair out of felt to stick under the hat too.  Then he will just wear jeans and sneakers and we're all set! 

Have fun with it!  Making costumes is a great way of recycling old pieces of clothing, use your imagination.  Or just use the internet, it's a great resource for this kind of thing!
